CNN —On Tuesday, 12-time Latin Grammy winner Rosalía stepped out in New York wearing an outfit that demanded a double-take. (Since the release of her third album, “Motomami,” Rosalía has been spotted in everything from biker-style shield sunglasses to Harley Davidson helmets). In 1994, the New York State’s Office of Mental Health proposed that straitjackets be discontinued after 18 patients died while restrained or in “unsupervised seclusion” between 1988 and 1992. But Rosalía isn’t the first to attempt to recontextualize the garment in the name of fashion. It’s not every art installation that instructs visitors to take small steps like a penguin. Then again, there’s nothing quite like the Art Shanty Projects, in which intrepid Minnesota artists in insulated jumpsuits and ice cleats annually recreate traditional ice fishing huts, called shanties, in their own eccentric style on a frozen lake in Minneapolis. The idea that 19 artists’ shanties would rise on Lake Harriet — Bde’ Unma in the Dakota language — for this three-weekend event was never a foregone conclusion. Already this winter there have been four fatalities from people driving vehicles onto the ice. In late December, more than 100 people had to be rescued from an ice floe that broke free from a fishing area on a northern Minnesota lake.

CNN —Rescuers are racing to reach at least 47 people buried in a landslide in southwestern China on Monday, according to state media. The landslide hit the mountain village of Liangshui in Yunnan province shortly before dawn, when most residents were asleep. More than 300 rescue workers were deployed along with dozens of fire engines and earth-moving equipment, according to CCTV. One man was pulled from the rubble shortly after 11 a.m. local time, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. Much of southern China, including Yunnan, is in the middle of a cold snap, with temperatures dropping near or below freezing, according to China’s Meteorological Administration.

Brokerage TD Cowen lowered its U.S. holiday spending estimate to 2% to 3% growth, from 4% to 5%, as it forecast flat Black Friday traffic. SPRING THINGS Among the top trends from the spring 2024 fashion shows was workwear-inspired fashion, like the outfits above. “IT’S NICE to feel calm sometimes,” said Luke Meier who, along with his wife, Lucie, designs Jil Sander. Their sterile Milan showspace had been made a sanctuary, with sunshine filtered through legions of white paper strips hung from the skylight. Guests in attendance seemed visibly soothed, as if waiting to ascend into heaven, or at least lounging in a five-star spa. This sense of ease pervaded spring’s best shows and clothes, which shirked recent seasons’ gimmicks, flash and frippery and instead brought women feel-good outfits for everyday.
